Reflection #2

The story I chose to reflect on is "The Falling Girl", by Dino Buzzati. This story is about a girl who commits suicide from the top of her apartment buildings. As she was falling the wealthy people were questioning her as she fell. They also examined and commented on her. They were inviting her to their cocktail parties but she always refused. She refused because she said she was in a hurry. Someone had question on her on that and all she said was, "They're waiting for me down there." The time was suspended for a long time because once she passed by a couple, they saw an old lady. She was young and yet once she was at the bottom she was an old women.
I found this story interesting because it shows the kind of world we live in. The language of the story isn't as serious as I thought it would be. It is more gentle and lovely. When you think of someone falling from a skyscraper, you think it'd be more serious. The author made it seem as if she was gently falling rather than plunging to her death. Over time you can tell she went from being happy to unhappy. Once the sun goes out, that is when the mood changed. She went from seeing party people to business people. She can see the business people working hard behind the glass. Then she noticed the event below her. She wanted to make it in time but then looks up to see other girls falling with her. I can tell she was envious because she was upset that they all had fancy looking clothes and all she wore was something simple.
I see this story as an example of society. She feels that she is less than the people in fancy clothes and jewelry. Even though we are happy with what we have, we want more. She was happy to be noticed for once. When she passed the couple, they didn't care that she fell. The guy simply went on to drinking his coffee. Not even bothered to see what had happened to Marta. I feel society doesn't care about you unless you are a loved one. He had no idea who she was and he didn't even bother to check.
